Appropriate handwashing with soap or handwash removes bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that can cause diseases like diarrhoea, pneumonia, and respiratory infections.
Here is a step-by-step guide to ideal hand-washing practice.
Handwashing is a simple personal hygiene measure that has historically proved to be effective in reducing the transmission of infections.
Apply soap to cover all surfaces of your hands. Just rinsing hands with water alone is much less effective in reducing germs compared to using soap or handwash.
Rub your hands together to lather. Handwashing is essential because our hands come into contact with countless surfaces, germs, and bacteria every day.
Rub each hand's back with the other palm. Scrubbing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds is essential to effectively kill germs.
Interlace fingers and scrub between them. When people wash their hands, they often miss key areas like the back of the hands, thumbs, and between fingers.
Scrub each thumb using a rotational movement with the opposite hand. Hand sanitizing gels and alcohol-based hand rubs are good alternatives to washing hands with soap and water, but they don’t work as well if your hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
Rub your fingertips against your palm to clean under your nails. Proper handwashing not only protects you from getting sick but also helps to prevent the spread of germs to others, especially in public places.
Rinse your hands well with clean, running water. Promoting and practicing regular handwashing is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce the spread of infections and improve public health.
Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean, single-use towel. Wet hands transfer germs more easily than dry hands, so drying hands thoroughly after washing is crucial.
